While the Cambridge Diet does not specifically aim to put the body into a state of ketosis, by its very nature ketosis can still occur, according to Allsbrook. ‘Given the severe reduction in calorie intake, and the use of meal replacements that lack any substantial carbohydrate content such as shakes and bars ketosis can occur when following the Cambridge Diet, he says.

When there are no carbohydrates to draw from, your liver produces ketones from fat and burns them for energy instead.

What is ketosis? ‘It’s the name given to the metabolic state that occurs when youre following a diet plan that has a very low intake of carbohydrates,’ Allsbrook explains. ‘Under normal circumstances, the body converts carbs into glucose, and uses this to produce energy for cells, bodily tissue and your organs.’

When there are no carbohydrates to draw from, your liver produces ketones from fat and burns them for energy instead. While this state does facilitate weight loss, ‘it also reduces the body’s overall energy levels,’ Allsbrook says, ‘often resulting in fatigue, headaches, muscle soreness or cramping, and digestive issues such as constipation or stomach aches.’

Are There Downsides To The Cambridge Diet

Yes, plenty. “A low calorie diet is unlikely to work in the long-term due to the physiological changes such as increased hunger and downregulating the metabolism,” says Jenna. “These changes can make it very challenging to stick to such a low-calorie intake.”

“However, other key considerations for healthy weight loss include the mental and social aspects of a healthy diet. A very low-calorie diet may leave individuals experiencing low moods due to dietary restriction and a lack of energy and nutrients to support the production of the happy hormones,” she says.

“Additionally, very low-calorie diets are less conducive to food-related social events and as a result, some people may begin to feel socially isolated if they have to miss out on events due to their diet.”

What The Critics Say

1:1 diet Cambridge weight plan

The Cambridge Diet claims to be safe and healthy to follow, but some experts and nutritionists say they do not recommend diets restricted to under 600 calories per day.

Max Bridger, a personal trainer from LDN Muscle , says: “It’s not something I would recommend to any of my clients.

Sure, eating under 500 calories for 12 weeks will make you drop weight fast, but you’ll also lose a lot of muscle too – so don’t expect an athletic, toned physique at the end.”

Due to the highly-restrictive nature of the diet, critics also say it does not equip dieters for long-term weight-loss.

“Don’t expect to keep the weight off when you return to normal eating,” says Bridger. “You may put the weight you lost while on the Cambridge Weight Plan back on, once finished and returned to your normal lifestyle, as your metabolism will likely have adapted to the restricted calories by slowing down.

“Ketosis is a state not many people will realistically achieve either,” he continues. “As well as being very tough to achieve, ketosis is easy to lose, and comes with side effects like bad breath, digestive discomfort, nausea and even hair thinning in some cases.”

Pros And Cons Of The Cambridge Diet

Weight loss – The Cambridge Diet website and social media pages are full of success stories. And of course there’s the Oxford University study – which found that after a year participants on the plan lost over 1 and a half stone.

Nutrients – The Cambridge diet promises that each meal replacement contains the required vitamins and nutrients your body needs to function properly.

Support – “The 1:1 support that comes with the 1:1 diet is a nice benefit,” says Nutritionist Emma. “Sometimes people need a little moral support or motivation if they are keen to really make lasting changes to their diet or lifestyle.”

Straight-forward plan – The Cambridge diet sets out what you can and can’t eat during each stage. People that like a diet with a clear structure may find this helpful.

Expensive – A weekly plan with 3 Cambridge Diet meals costs over £50. That adds up to over £200 a month which some people might not be able to afford or justify paying.

Side effects – Common side-effects of ketosis are bad breath, headaches and lethargy for the first three days. And participants in the Oxford University study reported these plus constipation and dizziness too. It’s important to note that not everyone experiences this. But these can be troubling side effects.

Drinks – Some people find it hard to drink 8 large glasses of water a day. And you are not allowed to have chewing gum, diet drinks or tea and coffee with milk on the 1st and 2nd step of the programme.

What Is The Cambridge Diet Plan

The Cambridge Diet was created by biochemist Dr Alan Howard, who worked at the Dunn Nutrition Laboratory in Cambridge , and his partner Dr Ian McLean-Baird, a consultant at a local hospital. They launched the plan in 1984 as a weight-loss method for those who were clinically obese. In recent years, it has become known as the 1:1 Diet by Cambridge Weight Plan.

The plan is based on a range of low-calorie shakes, soups and bars that you buy from the company and supposedly have a complete nutritional profile, designed specifically for immediate weight loss. Similar plans include the and other weight loss meal delivery services.

Within the 1:1 diet, there are six different variations you can follow. It starts with step one , which is essentially a very low-calorie diet, where you only eat the range of foods sold by Cambridge Weight Plan, all the way through to step six . This is a healthy diet combined with meal replacements at points, depending on how quickly you want to lose weight and how much you want to lose.

After you sign up, to help you along the way, you’re assigned a Cambridge Diet counselor to follow your weight loss journey from beginning to end.

Ive Been On This Diet 3 Times Yes 3

I’ve been on this diet 3 times YES 3 times and I’m going on again for a 4th. Although many may call me stupid including myself, I’ve fallen limb to its toxic thinking. The diet ranges from 6 different steps, step 1 being 600 cals a day on complete diet replacement products. The products are very expensive costing £55 a week for 21 products. I managed to lose 2 stone in a month and kept it off for 3 months before gaining it back again and more.i then went on it again with my mum who became a consultant. It made her life miserable and I began to stop eating because the products became unbearable to digest. I lost 1 and half stone in 7 months and then gained it back more again very quickly. I went on the diet again with my old consultant after being ignored by 2 others, I only stuck to 2 different products I liked. I stayed on for a month lost a stone before my personal life turned south. So here I am try again for round 4. Staying on till I’ve lost 3 stone then I can get rid of it for good and change my lifestyle to something that will work long term. This diet is not long term. Not worth it one bit. Especially for a long term investment. I know consultants who have had to give it up because its not working anymore and they are stopping lots of their best products . The diet does have an end plan to help people maintain but it doesn’t work and isn’t realistic. Once u lose weight you’re done in their eyes . It’s much more than that. This diet is uneducated.

Ive Tried Many Diets With No Success

Ive tried many diets with no success. Ill be honest I was very sceptical but the proof is in the pudding as they say. Ive lost 5 stone 9lb and am amazed at the variety of products. I love this diet. The one to one support from my consultant is priceless. She has been there day and night, every step of the way. I have more energy, better skin and feel so much younger. I would highly recommend this diet, so much so Ive become a consultant to help others too.

How Does The Cambridge Diet Work And What Can You Eat

During Step One of the plan, also known as the Total Diet Replacement Step you will consume a minimum of 600 calories a day in the form of three or four meal replacement products from the plan. Once the first stage is complete, your daily allowance steadily increases as you move up through the steps and begin to reintroduce normal foods back into your diet.

How it intends to offer fast weight loss results is, similar to plans like the ketogenic diet, the Cambridge Diet pushes the body into an intense calorie deficit. This is where you burn more calories every day, through simple acts like breathing and sleeping as well as exercise, than you eat. This is typically achieved through eating fewer calories throughout the day and increasing the amount you exercise.
