To Keto Or Not To Keto
Fruit on a carnivore adjacent diet is also appealing to carnivore dieters who want to cycle in and out of ketosis. And for people who want to avoid ketosis altogether.
Lets take a look at two of the main reasons that some carnivore dieters cite for avoiding or controlling ketosis.
Thyroid
Non-keto carnivore dieters point to studies showing that long-term ketosis can lead to reduced T3 or thyroid hormone.
The reasoning follows that the presence of sugar signals to your metabolism that youre in a carbohydrate rich environmentwhere fruits grow, so do many animals.
Whereas, the prolonged absence of carbs tells your body that youre in a low caloric environment. Your body responds by slowing metabolism in order to retain your body fat, which it will need to metabolize into fuel.
Fasting Hyperglycemia
One of the responses the body has to this ongoing famine state is to increase insulin resistance. At the same time, it increases gluconeogenesis . These two metabolic changes can lead to elevated blood sugara state called fasting hyperglycemia.
The body goes into this state as a way of conserving energy and storing it as fat to endure future deprivation.
Though many people thrive on long-term low-carb and carnivore diets, others may want to avoid these concerns by eating some fruit and other low-toxicity tubers like potatoes and sweet potatoes.
What Are Some Animal Based Diet Pros And Cons Let This Post Help You Decide Whether You Are Ready To Go Animal
Is an animal-based, low-toxin carnivore diet for everyone? As much as I would like to give a definitive yes or no, the real answer, as you may expect, is far more nuanced.
There are a lot of reasons why someone would want to consider an animal-based diet, but that does not mean that everyone needs to proceed immediately to their refrigerators and start tossing the bell peppers and kale directly into the trash bin. As with most diets, it has its pros and cons.
Lets dig in, shall we?
May Not Be Suited For Some Populations
The Carnivore Diet may be especially problematic for certain populations.
For example, those who need to limit their protein intake, including people with chronic kidney disease, should not follow the diet .
Also, those who are more sensitive to the cholesterol in foods, or cholesterol hyper-responders, should be cautious about consuming so many high-cholesterol foods .
Furthermore, certain populations with special nutrient needs would likely not meet them on the Carnivore Diet. This includes children and pregnant or lactating women.
Lastly, those who have anxiety about food or struggle with restrictive eating should not try this diet.
Summary
The Carnivore Diet is high in fat and may contain excessive amounts of sodium. It contains no fiber or beneficial plant compounds and may provide inadequate amounts of certain nutrients.
The Carnivore Diet includes only animal products and excludes all other foods.
Specifically, someone on the Carnivore Diet can eat:
- Meat: beef, chicken, turkey, organ meats, lamb, pork, etc.
- Fish: salmon, mackerel, sardines, crab, lobster, tilapia, herring, etc.
- Other animal products: eggs, lard, bone marrow, bone broth, etc.
- Low-lactose dairy : heavy cream, hard cheese, butter, etc.
According to some proponents of the diet, salt, pepper, and seasonings with no carbs are allowed.
In addition, some people choose to eat yogurt, milk, and soft cheese, but these foods are typically not included due to their carb contents.
Restricted foods include:

Fruit On The Carnivore Adjacent Diet Menu
One of the main features of the carnivore adjacent diet is that it includes fruit.
Fruit is the only part of a plant that is meant to be eaten by predators. Its sweet and laxative for a reason. When we eat the fruit, walk away, and defecate, weve spread and fertilized a plants seeds.
To play it safe, if you dont have any sensitivities, and are at a healthy weight, small to moderate servings of quality whole fruit are likely not bad for you. But avoid fruit juices and dried fruits.
What Is Allowed On A Carnivore Diet

A carnivorous diet revolves exclusively around animal foods and excludes all other fibrous plant foods.
- Meat: ruminant animals , poultry , pork, organ meats
- Fish & seafood: freshwater or ocean fish , shellfish
- Other animal foods: eggs, bone broth, bone marrow
- Animal fat: butter, tallow, lard, suet
- Dairy foods: raw milk, soft and aged cheese, homemade raw milk yogurt, kefir

The Carnivore Diet Has Been Popular For Years But Dietitians Don’t Recommend It
That January is known to some, like Rogan, as World Carnivore Month and to others as Veganuary highlights a persistent conflict between meat eaters and vegans about which diet is best.
The diet has been popularized by advocates like Dr. Shawn Baker, an orthopedic surgeon and the CEO of Revero.
“We’re trying to simplify. Rather than adding supplements, superfoods, this is the opposite approach, removing irritants,” Baker previously told Insider. “It’s very simple to follow. No other animal on the planet sits there with a diet manual or a calculator.”
The carnivore diet is also compatible with popular keto and paleo diets.
Other carnivore dieters have shared anecdotal stories of weight loss and mental clarity, using hashtags like #MeatHeals, on Twitter and Instagram.
But while Baker is working on research to study the health effects of a carnivore diet, there’s no evidence to back up any claims about its benefits.
Dietitians caution against carnivore diets because of potential side effects. Carbs are an important energy source, and eliminating them almost entirely can lead to muscle breakdown and fatigue, experts say. Some carnivore diets include carbs in the form of honey or fruit .
Eating red meat has also been linked to a higher risk of heart disease and cancer though the risks of eating unprocessed red meats might be lower than the risks of regularly eating processed meats. In contrast, diets rich in plants have been linked to a lower risk of illness.
Standard Carnivore Diet Meal Plan
The standard carnivore diet meal plan is focused on ruminant meats and healthy fats. Pork, poultry, fish, and shellfish play supporting roles, adding both nutrient and gastronomic variety.
Many people turn to the carnivore diet for relief of gastrointestinal issues like leaky gut. For this reason, we recommend eliminating potentially irritating dairy products for at least the first 4-6 weeks.

May Lack Certain Micronutrients And Beneficial Plant Compounds
The Carnivore Diet eliminates highly nutritious foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, all of which contain beneficial vitamins and minerals.
While meat is nutritious and provides micronutrients, it should not be the only part of your diet. Following a restrictive diet like the Carnivore Diet may lead to deficiencies in some nutrients and the overconsumption of others .
Whats more, diets that are rich in plant-based foods have been associated with a lower risk of certain chronic conditions like heart disease, certain cancers, Alzheimers, and type 2 diabetes (

Using Condiments On Carnivore Diet
If you like using lots of herbs for sauces and garnishing your meals, then, unfortunately, you’ll need to put those on hold when you plan on starting the carnivore diet for weight loss.
The reason we recommend you to avoid vegetables, herbs, or any other plant foods is to take full advantage of this type of elimination diet.
Remember that while on carnivore diet, you won’t need anything more than salt, pepper, and some fatty meat or bone marrow.
What Are Carnivore Diet Side Effects
Carnivore diet side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, headache, hydration issues from fluid loss, dizziness, fatigue and insomnia. Some of these are short-term and will last for days to weeks.
Many of them are a result of electrolyte imbalances due to no carbs in your eating plan. It will take some trial and error to figure this out as ketosis and difficult to adjust to.
If any of these persist, you should consult your doctor.

May Contribute To Nutrient Deficiencies
While meat is nutritious and provides a diverse array of micronutrients, it doesnt nourish our needs for every vitamin and mineral.
On a meat-only diet, these four nutrients will be particularly difficult to obtain in high quantities:
- Calcium A mineral required for bone, muscle, and nerve health.
- Vitamin C An antioxidant that boosts immune cell function and is crucial for collagen synthesis. Without consuming adequate amounts, we can develop scurvy and its unpleasant symptoms .
- Vitamin E An antioxidant that helps protect LDL particles from oxidizing and contributing to atherosclerosis.
- Vitamin K2 A fat-soluble vitamin helps reduce the calcification of blood vessels.
However, this list assumes that you are eating organ meats and fatty fish. If you arent consuming organ meats and seafood, we must add four more micronutrients to list:
- Vitamin A crucial for eye health, skin health, and proper immune system function.
- Folate A B vitamin that plays a key role in cell growth, metabolism, and methylation.
- Manganese A trace mineral that is essential for detoxification.
- Magnesium Supports more than 300 biochemical reactions, involving energy production, DNA repair, and muscle contraction.
That being said, it is possible to follow the diet for several years without any clear signs of nutrient deficiencies. Since nutrient requirements vary for each person, it is best to monitor your diet and health for nutrient deficiencies and their specific symptoms.

Golden Rule Of The Carnivore Diet
If you stick to eating just meat , you’ll be fine. Dairy products are allowed since they come from animals, but this is where you will begin to find carbohydrates creep onto the nutritional labels.
As you can see, we’ve separated the dairy products into two categories: Low-lactose and high-lactose. This is because lactose is just that, the sugar in milk. And what does sugar equal? CARBS! The big no-no.
So, to truly be following the Carnivore Diet, you need to, at the very least, avoid high-lactose dairy products. It’s really up to you to decide how much you want to limit the low-lactose dairy products, though.
To help you out a bit here, we’ll include a list below featuring standard carbohydrate amounts per serving in everyday dairy products.

Carnivore Diet Meal Plans: The Takeaway
Though simple at first glance, the carnivore diet allows for a surprising variety of approaches to help you meet your health and fitness goals.
A typcial approach makes room for eggs and dairy, while a Lion diet calls for nothing but ruminant meat and water. For the adventurous, theres the nose-to-tail approach that incorporates the entire animal from liver to testicals. And for people who want a gentler path out of the Standard American Diet and into an ancestral way of eating, theres the carnivore adjacent plant that includes some fruits and roots.
What all these carnivore diet meal plans have in common is a caloric core of ruminant animal meats.

How Long Does It Take To Transition To A Plant
There is no one answer to this question as the timeline for transitioning to a plant-based diet will vary from person to person. Some people may be able to make the switch relatively quickly, while others may take a bit longer to adjust to a new way of eating. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide how long it will take to transition to a plant-based diet.
As a nutrition and diet expert, I receive a lot of inquiries from people who want to transition to a plant-based diet but dont know where to start. While some people prefer a gradual transition, others prefer a quick start. You should begin on a plant-based diet three weeks into the program. According to scientific evidence, a plant-based diet with adequate protein and less than ideal amounts of protein is best. It is widely acknowledged that you should consume 40 to 60 grams of protein per day. The best diet to follow is to consume a lot of beans and lentils due to their high protein content. We must consume a variety of whole foods and plant-based foods in order to stay healthy.

How To Eat An Animal
If youre new to all of this, I suggest choosing a definition that resonates with you and rolling with it.
If youre someone who likes following a precise road map, go with this definition:
Definition #1: Animal-based means you only eat foods from Paul Saladinos approved low toxic foods list .
If this is you, youll exclusively eat the foods on his low toxic lists, with the majority of the foods you eat being animal foods.
And if youre someone who likes autonomy and flexibility , go with this definition
Definition #2: Animal-based means the majority of the foods you eat are animal foods, and you also eat some plants.
If this is you, eat the foods on his low and medium toxicity lists , and if you tolerate some foods on his high toxicity list, include them in moderation if you enjoy them. animal-based diet food list

Athletes Should Be Patient To See Results

Athletes should note that for their bodies to adapt to this extreme diet it will take around six months.
High performing athletes may need the diet modifying to meet their bodys needs. Adding vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and kale may sometimes be required, despite the fact that they are technically prohibited by the diet. When it comes to energy before exercise, sweet potatoes and apples are best advised.

What Can You Eat On The Carnivore Diet
While the answer might seem simple tackling this trend is a bit more nuanced than that. Most folks fill their cart with nose to tail cuts of meat and fish. This kind of diet usually calls for grass-fed, pasture-raised meats and wild-caught seafood. Depending on personal preferences, this list might also include eggs, full-fat dairy, herbs, spices, condiments, and non-starchy vegetables.
Finding The Best Quality Eggs
As you can see in the chart above, eggs, especially the yokes, are loaded with healthy fats and powerful nutrients.
These nutrients are found in greater abundance in the highest quality eggs laid by happy healthy hens raised outdoors. Here are a few tips for finding the highest quality eggs, as well as some marketing gimmicks to watch out for.
Brown or White Eggs?
Theres no difference between the nutrients in brown or white eggs. The only thing setting them apart is the breed of the hen laying them. So color is not a criteria for choosing healthy eggs.
Egg Grades?
Grade AA, A, and B have no real nutritional meaning and refer only to the firmness of the egg whites and the roundness of the yokes. You can get super nutritious grade B eggs at a farmers market from hens roaming around eating actual worms and other critters. While at the same time you can get nutritionally unimpressive grade AA conventional eggs from the supermarket. So again, not a factor for choosing healthy eggs.
Vegetarian-Fed
Chickens are natural omnivores, evolved to live off grubs, worms, and insects, as well as grass ad grains. In order to be vegetarian fed, chickens have to be kept in cages. The vegetarian feed is usually GMO corn. Like humans, chickens arent meant to be vegetarians.
Organic Eggs
Omega-3 Eggs
Pasture Raised
Farmer Eggs
