Tip 1: Reduce Alcohol Intake

5 Dietitian-Approved PCOS Weight Loss Tips

Alcohol is, sometimes surprisingly to some, super calorie dense – with up to 300 calories per drink – which means it can lead to weight gain.

It is important to remember that alcohol contains a lot of sugar, which will raise your blood glucose levels and affect insulin production. This means you may experience more hunger pangs and cravings when drinking than when not.

Moreover, alcohol actually inhibits the body’s ability to burn fat and increase weight loss – so be mindful that you are adding lots of calories into your diet!

What Is The Best Diet For Pcos

Thebest diet for PCOS depends on the symptoms a person is experiencing. Ideally, eating habits that help to decrease insulin resistance, regulate blood sugar, minimize risk for associated conditions, and manage weight should be practiced.

The best diet is one that is maintainable and realistic for the long run, isnt restrictive, makes your body feel good, and that pairs carbohydrate, fat, protein, and fiber foods well to maintain a stable blood sugar throughout the day, says Felice Ramallo, RD, lead dietitian atAllara.

PCOS increases the risk of developing the following conditions, especially in women who are overweight:

  • High blood pressure

Some diet plans can help prevent these health conditions, and alleviate other symptoms. The Mediterranean diet and theDASH diet have been shown to improve PCOS symptoms. These diets are fairly similar to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Some people with PCOS may wish to explore a vegan diet, but there are too few studies to draw conclusions about a vegan diet and PCOS, Ramallo says. However, it is generally recognized as a health-promoting dietary pattern. It could very easily be combined with a Mediterranean diet or DASH-style eating pattern, which we know have numerous benefits for the condition.

Ramallo generally advises against the paleo diet and the keto diet for PCOS. Theres a lack of evidence that either diet works for PCOS, and both are difficult to adhere to.

If your daughter is experiencing polycystic ovary syndrome and weight gain, its important to keep in mind that lifestyle changes, such as proper diet and exercise, can reduce the diseases severity.

Excessive weight gain is common in teens with PCOS. But without proper diagnosis and treatment, the condition can lead to obesity, diabetes, heart disease and fertility issues.

Teens may be overweight or gain weight very easily with PCOS, said Kimberly S. Huhmann, M.D., pediatric and adolescent gynecologist with Norton Childrens Gynecology, affiliated with the UofL School of Medicine. But these symptoms can be managed with a holistic approach which involves a healthy lifestyle.

How To Find If You Have Pcod

Some common symptoms can be seen by a female, which can directly indicate if you are suffering from the problem of PCOD. The symptoms are as follows-

  • You have irregular, missed, or very light periods.
  • If you have excessive hair, especially on the back, legs, and facial hair.
  • Also, if you have male baldness patterns.
  • Excessive weight gain, especially around the belly area of your body.
  • You are unable to conceive naturally, even after trying a lot.
  • However, doctors may suggest some tests and physical exams confirming your condition.

Many patients having bulky uterus complain of stomach aches throughout their menstruation period. Performing Hysteroscopy allows doctors to see inside your uterus directly and verify the condition you suffer from.

    Other Ways To Treat Pcos

Anyone who thinks they may have PCOS should visit their healthcare provider to explore a possible diagnosis. They should also see their physician to help manage irregular menstrual cycles and fertility concerns, says Dr. Huddleston. If hair growth, hair loss, or acne are bothersome, physicians can assist in medical treatments. Finally, weight gain or questions about metabolic health should prompt a visit.

While diet and exercise can play a big part in helping relieve symptoms of PCOS, other measures may need to be taken as well.

  • Tip : Eat Plenty Of Protein

Protein is the building block of life. Protein is essential for a healthy diet because it provides all nine amino acids that are needed to build muscle and other tissues in our body.

Eating protein helps women with PCOS lose weight not only by providing more satiety but also from aiding fat burning. Eating high-protein foods such as eggs, meat and fish is a great idea for those women with PCOS who are looking to lose weight.

There is a bit of a recurring theme here right? Feeling fuller for longer = more weight lost. Fat and protein are the keys here.

In a study of 57 women with PCOS, one group was given a high protein, high fat diet and the other was given a more standard diet .

Guess which group lost more weight? You got it!

The group with the higher protein diet lost significantly more weight.

In my clinical experience, I would say that this diet fat and high protein) is the number one diet for women with PCOS, both for losing weight and balancing their hormones.

How Diet And Exercise Can Influence Symptoms In Pcos

Can diet and exercise improve PCOS symptoms? There is much evidence demonstrating the effects of certain diets on PCOS symptoms and associated conditions. So, this is where we look for different dietary strategies to cure PCOS.

PCOS often involves impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance. PCOS patients are at higher risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. These are the major problems which we have to address through diet and exercise.

A low glycemic index diet plan with exercise that can increase metabolism are the basic strategies to adapt for PCOS treatment.

    Berries & Certain Fruits

Eating fruits in moderation is key for PCOS sufferers because fruits contain fructose, a sugar that can raise glucose levels in blood.

The trick is to stick to fruits that contain a low glycemic index such as cherries, apples and kiwi.

Berries such as blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, currants, and cranberries are rich in antioxidants. These antioxidants include polyphenols, flavonoids, and other phytocomponents that boost immunity, fight inflammation and prevent obesity.

Also include fruits known as stone fruits because they contain a pit/seed/stone inside them. These include apricots, peaches, plums, nectarines. They contain anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties.

Remember to balance your fruit intake with a handful of nuts or seeds to regulate blood sugar. So you can have berries with gluten-free pancakes made of flaxmeal & eggs, eat a handful of berries with nuts, etc.

    Full Fat Dairy And Alternatives

Ramallo recommends full fat dairy over low or no-fat dairy products for people with PCOS, as thismay help improve fertility. Some examples of recommended dairy products include:

    • Plain greek yogurt

If you dont eat dairy, alternatives are available such as fortified soy milk, oat milk, or almond milk.

    Foods Rich In Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates can cause inflammation and exacerbate insulin resistance. For this reason, lowering your carb intake can help in managing PCOS and losing weight. So, for women with PCOS, it is wise to avoid foods rich in refined carbohydrates, including highly processed foods such as:

    • Anything made with white flour

Importance Of A Diet For Pcos

PCOS makes it difficult for the body to utilise insulin responsible for the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. It creates resistance causing insulin and sugar to build up in the bloodstream. High insulin levels prevent lipolysis , making weight loss difficult. Following a PCOS-specific diet to regulate insulin production stimulates lipolysis, helping in weight loss and weight management.

Top 3 PCOS Breakfast Ideas to Lose Weight (Gluten Free Dairy Free on a Budget!)

Given below are a few tips that women affected by PCOS can follow.

  • Make sure to eat a nutritious breakfast excluding high carbohydrates or inflammation-causing ingredients. Remember never to skip breakfast as it would induce you to over-eat during the mid-day meal and hence cause an insulin spike.
  • Drinking water about 30 minutes before meals can help control over-eating and help one feel full.
  • Eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly as this would improve digestion and reduce the chances of insulin resistance and subsequent weight gain.
  • Finish your dinner at least 2 hours before bed. Delayed dinners will lead to indigestion and cause disturbed sleep. This may bring down the ability of the body to repair itself.
  • Its is advisable for women with PCOS to follow a set diet plan that ensures weight management. Split large meals into smaller portions and eat every two hours. This is a proven method that can help in maintaining weight.

    Get Your Macros Right

Macros are the new calories for weight loss. The idea here is that the relative proportion of macronutrients in your diet is key to managing body weight. This is because macros influence blood sugar levels. Over time, that means lower insulin and less body fat.

The USDA recommends the following macros for the average adult : 10-35% protein, 20-35% fat, 4565% carbohydrate.

For women with PCOS, this macro balance is likely to cause weight gain.

I recommend a diet thats roughly 20% protein, 60% fat, and 20% carbohydrate. This is low-carb by most standards, but not ketogenic. As I explain here, I dont recommend the keto diet for PCOS.

I provide a full accounting of macros for PCOS here. The key take home is that the best way to lose weight with PCOS is to eat more fat and fewer carbs. Doing so improves insulin regulation which leads to a reduction in body fat.

The balance of macros is more important than how many calories you consume.

Why Is It Hard To Lose Weight With Pcos

Polycystic ovary syndrome weight loss can be challenging for most women diagnosed with PCOS. What makes shedding weight difficult is insulin resistance. When you have high insulin resistance, your body doesnt process carbohydrates the way it should. As a result, your body starts storing more fat, and weight regulation gets massively affected.

When a body doesnt normally respond to insulin or requires higher than normal insulin levels to move blood sugar into cells, losing weight becomes difficult. Some people may even have to rely on PCOS medication for weight loss.

Understanding Why You Are Gaining Weight

As there is a release of extra androgen hormones in the body, with insulin resistance, the women suffering from PCOD may have a sudden weight gain in them.

Also, women who are overweight or obese have a high level of the leptin hormone, which is produced in fatty tissue. It can disrupt the hormone balance and lead to infertility in women.

Hence, women need to consult a gynecologist for PCOD Treatment as early as possible. If women cannot conceive because of PCOS, they should consult IVF specialists before IVF or IUI process.

Benefits Of An Indian Diet For Pcos Weight Loss

    7 food that can #curePCOS

Traditional Indian meals are functional, offering additional nutritional value beyond the essential vitamins and minerals. They prevent the risk of disease by supporting the immune system, aid weight loss, and regulate blood sugar levels.

Here are some of the benefits of following an Indian diet plan for PCOS:

    • The wide variety of vegetables and whole grains make the Indian diet naturally rich in fibre, essential in maintaining the optimal glycaemic load. Foods with a low glycaemic index prevent insulin levels from fluctuating. For example, rice has a high glycaemic index compared to dal. When you eat it in the form of khichdi, which is a combination of both, the glycaemic index becomes optimal.

    Expert Says:

Why is the glycaemic index of the diet important?

    • Fermented foods like idli, dosa, or curd, which are staples in the Indian diet, are rich in probiotics. They help in maintaining the health of the digestive system and aid in weight loss.
    • Indian meals use a variety of spices and herbs containing antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, which help manage symptoms of PCOS.
    • Indian diet has several low-calorie options for snacking like jowar or wheat puffs, makhana, and roasted chana. You can opt for these relatively healthier snacks instead of packaged foods, which are generally high in preservatives and can be harmful to the body.

  • Get sufficient sleep. Sleep-deprived individuals have a tendency to overeat the following day. This gradually leads to obesity or overweight.
  • Learn to manage your stress levels. Stress is another factor that may increase insulin resistance and cause type 2 diabetes. Experts suggest yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises for better stress management.
  • Remember to never lose self-confidence. The medical world has been coming out with several mind-blowing innovations and hence, not too far away from a sure-shot treatment for PCOS. Until then, healthy dietary and lifestyle decisions are the way to go!
  • Superfoods To Include In Your Diet
