Who Is The Author Of Eat Right For Your Blood Type
Dr. Peter DAdamo, a naturopathic physician, developed a diet based on blood types, which he describes in his book Eat Right for Your Type..
How does your blood type affect your diet?
DAdamo theorizes that your blood type provides a distinctive marker for which foods are best for you, based on the diet of your ancestors with the same blood type. This means a nutritious diet for one blood type may include different foods than a nutritious diet for another blood type.
Is The Blood Type Diet Healthy A Registered Dietitian Weighs In
I really loved finding out my blood type when I donated blood . The science around blood types is pretty interesting and fairly new. There’s A, AB, B and O and all types can be positive or negative. It wasn’t until the early 1900’s that we learned about different blood types, since some people were dying from blood transfusions. Then in the 1960’s scientists developed RhoGAM, a key drug that helps protect babies born to moms with Rh-negative blood . Research has even found that certain blood types are correlated with certain diseases, like some types of cancer and heart disease. But when it comes to impacting what you eat, does your blood type make a difference? Here’s the scoop on the Blood Type Diet, what you’re supposed to eat depending on your blood type and if it actually works.

When It Comes To Health Does Blood Type Matter
Blood type isn’t something dietitians take into consideration when providing medical nutrition therapy, Rios says. “As dietitians, we focus on the patient as an individual,” she adds. “Important things to consider include health history, chronic illnesses, current lifestyle, food allergies, food intolerances, sensitivities, stress and digestion.”

What Are The Benefits Of The O Positive Blood Type Diet
The diet for blood type O positive may have several health benefits, according to DAdamo. However, more research is needed to understand if there is a true link between blood types and diet.
However, the diet does focus on lean meats, vegetables, and fruits, which may help overall health.
- Cardiovascular health: A diet rich in healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats in olive oil, has been shown to improve cardiovascular health.
- Improved digestion and nutrient absorption: The diet includes plenty of fiber-rich vegetables and fruits that help improve digestion and reduce constipation or loose stools.
- Weight loss or maintenance: The diet for O positive blood type is low in carbohydrates, and a high protein meal plan may help you feel full for longer.

Is The Blood Type O Diet Good For You
According to DAdamo, the blood type O diet is beneficial for people with O positive blood type as well as people with O negative blood type. Because blood type O is the most common blood type, I am going to look at the Blood Type O Diet and discuss what foods you should eat and what you should definitely avoid.
Is The Blood Type Diet A Healthy Choice For You
The blood type diet is based on theory it isn’t rooted in scientific fact and its effectiveness has not been proven in clinical settings. The overall plan does emphasize whole, natural, and unprocessed foods, however, which makes it healthier than some pre-packaged meal plans or meal-replacement plans.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s 20202025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans provide recommendations for a balanced diet. The following nutrient-dense foods are considered part of a healthy diet:
- Oils, including oils found in foods
Depending on your blood type, this plan may or may not meet the USDA’s definition of a healthy meal plan.
- The Type AB diet is the least restrictive and allows for the widest variety of foods to ensure adequate nutrition.
- The Type A dietprohibits meat and dairy, which have nutrients, namely protein, that can be found in other foods with careful planning.
- The Type B diet also offers a varied diet, with the exception of nuts and seeds, and meets most of the requirements of the USDA healthy eating plan.
- The Type O diet avoids dairy and grains, which are considered important parts of a healthy diet, according to the USDA. With careful planning, however, the nutrients found in grains and dairy can be made up by eating a variety of vegetables.

Good Points And Bad Points
Now that weve debunked much of the blood type dietespecially the blood type O diet there should be a few things noted. While the science is inconclusive, the blood type O diet does have some good ideas to it.
Lean meats, for example, should be eaten over more fatty cuts and types. Eating a lot of fish is also a good idea. Not eating processed meat is also a pretty good tip as processed meat tends to have higher sodium levels and arent as good for you as a cut of meat.
That being said, adding more vegetables to your diet than what the blood type O diet recommends would also be a good idea, especially anything high in fiber. Once again, it should be noted that benefits of this diet are not proven to relate to blood type.

Risks Of Following A Blood Type Diet
Despite the lack of scientific evidence of the blood type diet, it remains a topic of discussion in the diet culture.
The four diets in the blood type diet emphasize eating healthy whole foods and exercising, which can be beneficial to your health. But the diet could still be risky.
For example, the O blood type diet emphasizes a high intake of animal proteins, which may lead to other health problems.
Your blood type alone doesnt determine your overall health, and you may put yourself at risk by engaging in the blood type diet without your doctors advice.

Does It Make Any Sense
The theory behind this diet is that blood type is closely tied to our ability to digest certain types of foods, so that the proper diet will improve digestion, help maintain ideal body weight, increase energy levels, and prevent disease, including cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Type O was said to be the original “ancestral” blood type of the earliest humans who were hunter-gatherers, with diets that were high in animal protein. Group A was said to evolve when humans began to farm and had more vegetarian diets. Group B blood types were said to arise among nomadic tribes who consumed a lot of dairy products. And since Group AB blood was supposed to have evolved from the intermingling of people with types A and B blood, type AB recommendations were intermediate between those for people with types A and B blood.
Each of these theories has been challenged. For example, there is evidence that type A was actually the first blood group to evolve in humans, not type O. In addition, there is no proven connection between blood type and digestion. So, in addition to a lack of evidence that the diet works, serious questions remain about why it should work in the first place.
Your Blood Type Diet Chart
Type O blood often signifies a physiology which is uniquely suited to processing animal proteins. As a result of this efficiency, the optimal diet for those with Type O blood features a lot of meat, poultry, and seafood. These high-quality proteins are efficiently processed and converted into nutrition for the body to provide energy and ensure the healthy function of the bodys many different systems. On the other hand, gluten in many grain products, can antagonize the body and throw a wrench in its works, creating stress on the body and creating imbalances. We see lots of people in our coaching program who are experiencing this kind of stress and need our help with their recovery.
Following the correct blood type diet for Type O blood helps ensure the bodys equilibrium and functioning are maintained. Find out which foods are best for the Type O blood type diet and which to avoid using the chart below.

Eating For Your Specific Blood Type
We have mentioned earlier in this article that different blood types may cause people to become either more or less susceptible to specific conditions.
Some research has also suggested that some blood types have been connected to an increase in the risk of heart attacks, pancreatic cancer and blood clots.
Take, for instance, some research has pointed out that people with O type blood are at a lower risk of getting a coronary heart disease but at an even higher risk of suffering from a peptic ulcer.
According to DAdamo, there occurs a chemical reaction whenever the blood comes in contact with some specific foods, specifically with a protein called lectin.
Lectins, which is a protein that is found in food, has a direct effect on both the digestive tract and blood. This protein binds to cells within a persons body, causing the cells to clump together and potentially lead to hormonal disruptions. This effect of lectins on the body is comparable to the presence of a foreign substance.
DAdamo has suggested that individuals with varying blood types have varying reactions to different kinds of food and their lectins. Because of this, he has recommended unique and particular diets for individuals with these varying blood types.
Some studies have shown that many lectins may react with all types of blood, nevertheless, not specific ones.
What Exactly Is Blood Type O

Your blood group is identified by antigens and antibodies in the blood.
Antibodies are part of your bodys natural defenses against invading substances such as germs. Antibodies recognize anything foreign in your body and alert your immune system to destroy it.
Antigens are protein molecules found on the surface of red blood cells.
Blood group O has no antigens, but both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. As group O red blood cells dont have any A or B antigens, it can safely be given to any other blood type group .

So Whats The Downside
Its a fair question, especially since some improvements were seen in people who adopted certain blood type diets . Eating based on your blood type requires you to know your blood type and then follow a restrictive diet. Personal preferences might be a problem: a vegetarian with type O blood may struggle to stay on the assigned diet, and people who love red meat may be disappointed to learn they have type A blood. Recommended supplements are not cheap neither are the recommended organic foods. And if you have certain health conditions, such as high cholesterol or diabetes, a nutritionist can make better evidence-based recommendations for you than those determined by your blood type.
Blood Type O Diet Prohibition Avoid These 5 Types Of Foods
JAKARTA – Blood type O is called social, because it can donate blood to other blood types. If you are blood type O and are on a diet program, it is necessary to avoid some foods.
The effect can make a weight loss diet fail, because the list of taboo foods actually makes you fat for blood type O.
Diet based on blood type has been coined by Dr. Peter J. D’Adamo many years ago. Although many have received criticism for insufficient scientific evidence, most people follow a diet based on the recommendations in the book and do not experience any health problems.
Check out the list of what types of food are not consumed by Blood Type O below.
In fact, blood type O includes the most suitable foods compared to other blood types. Blood group O group are ‘hunters’ who are suitable for consuming a variety of foods.
Since ancient times, this group of hunters can eat all the results of hunting. Starting from vegetables, fruits, meat, and carbohydrates. But for people with blood type O a low carbohydrate diet is recommended.
This is related to the digestive system of this blood group, which is easier to digest fiber from meat than carbohydrate foods. Breads and other foods that contain carbohydrates make blood type O fat. The advice is to limit consumption of carbohydrates to keep your weight under control.

What Does The Science Say
There isn’t research that says eating for your blood type makes you any healthier or helps you lose wight. For some people, a diet that falls into one of these buckets may work for them, but for manythese diets are unnecessarily restrictive. I actually eat somewhat similarly to what’s recommended for my blood type, type A, since I love carbs and eat lots of plants, but I think that happens to be a coincidence. I also like more high-intensity exercise, like spinning and running, and definitely include plenty of heart-healthy fats in my diet. For what it’s worth, my husband loves meat and we happen to share a blood type.
Eating a majority plant-based diet or a lower-carb, higher-protein diet might help you lose weight at first. If you switch from a highly-processed diet with lots of added sugar, to a more whole-foods based dietyou’ll probably feel a little better and may have more energy. But it’s random to base these choices on your blood type. I’m all for trying to get more vegetables in your diet, regardless of your blood type. At first glance, all of the blood types should eat more fruits and vegetables. But getting into the weeds, these foods get much more random. Type A should avoid kidney beans for weight loss and type B should skip chicken and corn to lose weight. That just doesn’t make any sense.

Is The Blood Type Diet Safe What To Expect If You Try It
Theres concern that the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet for those with blood type O is too protein heavy. Animal protein, especially red meat, has been linked to health problems, such as heart disease and colorectal cancer, says Grotto.
Also, dietitians say its possible that individuals may experience nutritional deficiencies when following the eating plan.
The Eat Right 4 Your Type diet recommends calcium supplements for who cant eat dairy, for example, says Amy Jamieson-Petonic, RD, a pediatric and sports dietitian at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center who is based in Akron, Ohio. But you can only absorb a certain amount of calcium from supplements, and you get so much more from food. If you follow this diet for a long time, you could experience vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
Does A Blood Type Diet Really Work
Dr DAdamo believes that the way your body responds to food depends on what blood type you are, and that eating in this way can lead to weight loss and better digestive health.
Its also said to give your overall well-being a boost too.
But is it true can eating this way really have that much of an impact on our bodies?
The answer to this is mixed, mainly due to the fact there arent any peer-reviewed scientific studies to evidence or support the blood type diet.3
If you Google this specific question, youll find there are divided opinions on its effectiveness, with limited research to illustrate the claims that it does work.
Research published by Douglas Guggenheim, a physician at the Abramson Cancer Center in America found that certain chronic diseases, such as some types of cancer and heart problems, are more likely to be experienced by people with certain blood types.4
However, no research links have yet been made between these diseases and the blood type diets ability to reduce the risk of developing them.5
Meanwhile, a study published in the journal, PLoS One in 2014, found that following a diet thats similar to the blood type A and AB type in the blood type diet, was associated with lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
A total of 1,455 people completed questionnaires designed to determine how frequently they’d consumed certain foods in the space of a month as part of the study.
