Increased Risk For Heart Disease And Stroke
The authors of the 2014 Mayo Clinic Proceedings report a decreased risk for certain cardiac events, but also point out that excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading cause of premature death in the United States.
Specifically, heavy alcohol use is one of the most common causes of reversible hypertension. It accounts for about one-third of all cases of nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy, it is a frequent cause of atrial fibrillation, and it markedly increases the risk of strokeboth ischemic and hemorrhagic.

Know The Types Of Rum
While some may only be acquainted with certain brands or types of rum, there is actually a large range.
The three most popular types of rum are: gold, white, and dark.
Light rums are: clear, have no distinct flavor, usually used in cocktails, and are aged at least a year. These make a great rum to use in your rum and coke!
Gold rums are: golden in color, have a spicy/smoky flavor, can be used in mixed drinks but often drank by itself, and are aged for several years.
Dark rums are: deep in color, very rich flavor, matured for many years.

Is Spiced Rum Bad For Diabetics

Wines tend to have less carbohydrate than beer so may have a less pronounced affect on sugar levels. Spirits on their ow, such as whiskey, vodka, rum and gin, have no significant carbs in and therefore shouldnt push blood sugar values up. If you have them with a mixer this will need to be taken into account.

How Many Carbs In Rum What You Should Know
June 28, 2011·Lynn Terry·
Youll notice that rum bottles dont have nutrition facts, and if you go searching online for something like how many carbs in rum? youll get a wide variety of answers.
Which one is true? Is Bacardi Select 0 carb, or is it 1 carb per ounce? I still have no idea, but straight rum is very low carb if not zero carb.
I recently bought a bottle of Bacardi Select myself, along with a bottle of Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum both after a quick search brought up low carb forums stating that rum was a no / low carb alcohol.
The closest I have come to a straight answer is this fact that originally came from the Captain Morgan website : Captain Morgan® Original Spiced Rum contains approximately 75 calories per 1 1/4 oz serving size, 0 grams of fat and .4 grams of carbohydrates.
No worries in my book its obviously a very low carb alcohol, and one I like, so Im okay with not knowing the exact carb count. That said, there IS something you should think seriously about before mixing a drink if youre on a low carb diet
The Alcohol Stall
When youre eating low carb, you generally lose weight very fast. Noticing pounds lost almost daily even, if not weekly. But when you drink, even low carb alcohol, you get something called the alcohol stall.
As long as you know that upfront, and dont mind, theres no real harm having a Rum & Diet Coke now and then, or my new personal favorite: Rum & hazelnut coffee.

Alcohol And Weight Gain
The studies on alcohol and weight gain have been inconclusive so far, according to a review published in January 2015 in the journal Current Obesity Reports.
However, drinking alcohol could potentially cause weight gain in a number of ways. When you drink, your body burns alcohol as fuel and temporarily stops using carbohydrates and fat as a fuel source. The excess glucose from carbohydrates and lipids from fat end up getting stored as adipose tissue, or fat.
Alcohol also promotes greater hunger and lower satiety, causing you to eat more than you normally would. It can cause you to make poor food choices as well, so apart from the calories in your drink, you may end up consuming a whole lot of other unhealthy calories too.
Ingredients In Diet Coke
Apart from artificial sweeteners, the other ingredients in Diet Coke are carbonated water, caramel coloring, caffeine, phosphoric acid, citric acid and phenylalanine.
Diet Coke is an acidic drink, thanks to the carbonated water and the citric acid it contains. The American Dental Association warns that drinking acidic drinks like carbonated sodas can wear away the enamel coating that protects your teeth. Tooth erosion not only damages the appearance of your teeth but also leads to cavities and tooth infections.
Artificial sweeteners have also been linked to a higher risk of other health conditions, like stroke, Alzheimer’s and dementia, according to a study published in the journal Stroke in May 2017.
Aspartame, one of the artificial sweeteners in Diet Coke, also contains phenylalanine, which can be harmful to people who have a genetic condition known as phenylketonuria. People with anxiety or other mental disorders are also advised to take aspartame cautiously.
Pregnant women who have high levels of phenylalanine are also advised to avoid aspartame. Of course, if you’re pregnant, rum is out of the question too. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy, since it can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths and a range of lifelong disabilities in the child.

How Can I Drink Without Gaining Weight
There are 66 calories in one Bacardi and a Diet Coke. Only a few calories separate two of these mixed cocktails from a single beer. Compared to many beers on the market, two Bacardis and two diet Cokes are significantly less calorie. Most distilled spirits and diet Coke will have around the same number of calories, thus this is not a Bacardi-specific finding.
Does Rum Have More Sugar Than Other Spirits

Not too long ago, we talked about dosagethe addition of a bit of sugar to the final product to determine sweetness levels. It was actually surprising to realize that within all the refinements and rustic precision of sparkling wine production, something so simple as a spoonful of sugar might have a necessary place in the quality of the final product. Lesson learned.
However, we definitely had no idea this was the case for rum. Like corn-heavy bourbon, sugar cane-derived rum is a perceptibly sweeter spirit. And like bourbon, its often described with terms that might fit on a dessert menu: caramel, fig, banana, tropical fruit, vanilla, brown sugar, the list goes on. But we always thought these were just perceptions of flavor that suggested sweetness, especially since no actual sugar can make it through the distilling process. As with bourbon, distilled rum is theoretically sugar-free. Best diet ever!
Here comes the mind-blown/the-more-you-know moment: finished rum is not necessarily sugar free, including many rums you know and love. Thats right, rum can actually have a dosage all its owna small amount of sugar thats added to the finished product to achieve a desired flavor profile.
drop!
Not that this impeaches the overall quality of a rum you know and love. Just remember, next time you polish off a tumbler of 23 year, you might wanna brush your teeth.

The carbohydrate amount per 1 fl oz of gin and tonic is 3g. This means, if you drink eight fl oz, the total carbohydrates will be 24g in size. The carbs included are starch and sugars, mostly from lime or lemon juice. Even if no sugar is added, it will still give some due to its natural ingredients. Unfortunately, this alcoholic flavor always becomes the number one choice among many low-carb drinkers. They tend to avoid it but cant resist enjoying that taste once in a while.

Why So Much Liquor
When it comes to low-carb alcohol, distilled spirits are the safest bet. Theyre virtually all free of carbohydrates, so you only need to worry about what youre mixing them with. But not everyone likes drinking hard liquor, so weve included some dieter-friendly beers and wines, too.
Obviously, a regular cola would shatter your daily carbohydrate allowance. But diet soda lends itself to numerous carb-free cocktails. This spin on the traditional Jack and Coke simply uses Diet Coke instead.

Rum Nutrition Facts And Health Tips

Mia Syn, MS, RDN is a registered dietitian nutritionist with a master of science in human nutrition. She is also the host of Good Food Friday on ABC News 4.
Rum is a distilled beverage that originated in the West Indies in the mid-1600s. Originally made from molasses, the popular liquor is now distilled around the world using ingredients such as sugarcane juice. Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad, and the Dominican Republic are known for their rum production.
Rum is available in dark and light varieties. Light rum is usually not aged as long as dark rum. It has a sweeter, lighter flavor. Dark rum, on the other hand, is aged longer in oak or wooden barrels and takes on a deeper color and flavor that is bolder.
Flavored rum is also available. For example, lemon, lime, coconut, and pineapple rums are produced by major manufacturers. Flavored rums may include ingredients that change the basic nutritional information for the beverage.
