Your blood type can affect your health in surprising ways — it’s tied to your risk of heart disease, how much you get bit by mosquitoes and more.
That’s why it’s not surprising that there’s even a diet based on blood type, which proposes that people with type O blood should focus on eating different foods than, say, those with type A or B. For example, people with blood type A are advised to avoid eating red meat, and those with type O are advised to do the opposite.
But whether or not the Blood Type Diet is safe or healthy is another story. I asked registered dietitian nutritionist Anna Rios about the potential benefits associated with eating based on blood type.
What You Can Eat
That depends on your blood type. Here’s what D’Adamo recommends for each type:
Type O blood: A high-protein diet heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables, and light on grains, beans, and dairy. D’Adamo also recommends various supplements to help with tummy troubles and other issues he says people with type O tend to have.
Type A blood: A meat-free diet based on fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, and whole grains — ideally, organic and fresh, because D’Adamo says people with type A blood have a sensitive immune system.
Type B blood: Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds. Chicken is also problematic, D’Adamo says. He encourages eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy.
Type AB blood: Foods to focus on include tofu, seafood, dairy, and green vegetables. He says people with type AB blood tend to have low stomach acid. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoked or cured meats.

Is The Blood Type Diet Safe
Following the Blood Type Diet can be “extremely restricting,” Rios says, and, if you aren’t being guided by a registered dietitian, it could lead to other health issues. There are lots of things to consider before excluding certain food groups from your diet.
If you have or are at risk for high blood pressure or heart disease, for instance, eating a diet high in red meat could lead to problems. Diabetics, on the other hand, are often advised to avoid eating cheese, dairy and other foods in large amounts. Other health conditions including IBS and iron deficiency can be exacerbated by meticulously consuming or avoiding certain categories of foods.

What Experts Say About The Blood Type Diet
To date, there is very little evidence that adhering to strict blood type-based diet recommendations will improve health outcomes. “The blood type diet has been debunked multiple times by new and improved research,” Rios says. “People who claim to start feeling better on this diet typically do so because they start cooking at home more and eating more whole foods and less processed foods which can improve anyone’s health.”
The most comprehensive study was done in 2013 by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and found “no evidence to validate the purported health benefits of blood type diets.” That said, most of the nutrition plans laid out in D’Adamo’s book may be healthier than your current eating habits since they do focus on natural, whole and unprocessed foods.
D’Adamo suggests folks with type A blood are healthiest when adhering to a plant-based diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables.
When It Comes To Health Does Blood Type Matter
Blood type isn’t something dietitians take into consideration when providing medical nutrition therapy, Rios says. “As dietitians, we focus on the patient as an individual,” she adds. “Important things to consider include health history, chronic illnesses, current lifestyle, food allergies, food intolerances, sensitivities, stress and digestion.”

It is said that people with different blood types react differently to stress and even have specific gut bacteria . Dr. DAdamo notes that over the course of history not all blood types originally existed at the same time, which is in part why they shouldnt eat the same, as different foods were more readily available at certain time periods and geographic locations.

The Ab Blood Type Diet
Type AB inherited type As low stomach acid and type Bs adjustment to eating meat. Because of their low levels of stomach acid, the meat often gets stored as fat. The food also tends to hang around for longer in the stomach because it takes longer to digest.
It is recommended that type ABs eat smaller, more frequent meals to avoid digestive problems due to inadequate stomach acid and pectic enzymes.
Dr. DAdamo also recommends avoiding mixing certain foods, because that can slow down the digestive process. He says that ABs will have an easier time digesting if they eat proteins and starches separately.
