Diet Sodas May Be Hard On The Kidneys
Women Who Drink 2 or More Diet Sodas Daily Double Their Risk of Kidney Function Decline, Study Shows
Nov. 2, 2009 â Diet soda may help keep your calories in check, but drinking two or more diet sodas a day may double your risk of declining kidney function, a new study shows.
Women who drank two or more diet sodas a day had a 30% drop in a measure of kidney function during the lengthy study follow-up, according to research presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology in San Diego.
âThirty percent is considered significant,â says researcher Julie Lin, MD, MPH, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and a staff physician at Brigham and Womenâs Hospital in Boston. Thatâs especially true, she says, because most study participants had well-preserved kidney function at the start of the study.
Soft Drinks With Potassium Citrate
Processed foods and beverages often contain non-nutritive substances added to enhance the products in some way, be it for flavoring, coloring or preserving. Potassium citrate is an additive found in soft drinks as well as candy and ice creams. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration deemed it GRAS generally recognized as safe in 1977.

Is Dark Soda Bad For Your Kidneys

Colas and dark sodas are problematic for dialysis patients and those with severely impaired renal function . These drinks are high in phosphorus, which should be avoided if you have severe renal disease. The phosphates in cola and other soft drinks can cause problems for people with weakened bones as it helps them to “calcium up.” Further, people who undergo hemodialysis cannot drink alcohol at all because it would need to be removed from the body during this process.
People with diabetes may also suffer from kidney disease called diabetic nephropathy. This is when there is too much glucose in the blood causing damage to the kidney tissues. It is important for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar levels using medications and insulin and prevent excess weight gain. This will help prevent the development of kidney disease.
Lastly, people who abuse alcohol may develop acute kidney injury . Alcohol affects how well your kidneys work by removing oxygen-rich blood from around your organs including your brain. This can lead to insufficient oxygenation of these areas of your body. Additionally, heavy drinking can cause long-term effects on your kidneys such as fibrosis and loss of function.
In conclusion, excessive consumption of cola and other dark beverages can be harmful to your kidneys.

Diet Coke Can Harm Your Health In Several Ways
Besides upping your risk of chronic disease, drinking Diet Coke can also damage your kidneys and negatively impact your gut microbiome. A 2017 study published in CJASN found an association between diet soda consumption and an elevated risk of kidney disease. In addition, the artificial sweeteners in diet soda were found to negatively affect gut health and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, according to a 2019 study published in Advances in Nutrition.
“Diet Coke, like any other food or drink, is processed by the kidneys. Large amounts of diet soda have been connected to kidney damage and disease. This is due to the high phosphorus and synthetic ingredients passing through the kidneys,” explains Best. “Also, diet soda changes the gut’s microbiome and exacerbates the inflammatory response in the body. The artificial nature of the ingredients in Diet Coke makes it moderately inflammatory. The changes to the gut made by artificial sweeteners also exacerbate inflammation in the body.”
How Much Sodium Does Coke Have
Soda contains sodium. In a 12-ounce can of cola from a well-known brand, there are 46 mg of salt. A 12-ounce can of all-natural soda contains 36 milligrams, whereas the same-sized can of root beer carries 71 milligrams a can of lemon-lime soda contains 64 milligrams and a 12-ounce can of root beer contains 71 milligrams.

You’ll Crave More Sugar When You Drink Diet Coke Every Day
Artificial sweeteners definitely get a bad rap, but a lot of people still turn to them to help them stop consuming so much sugar. While artificial sweeteners, like the ones found in Diet Coke, may not have any calories, they can make you crave moresugar.
According to the Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine, “artificial sweeteners, precisely because they are sweet, encourage sugar craving and sugar dependence.” So if you are trying to cut back on sugar, Diet Coke probably isn’t the way to go about it. Additionally, Frank Lipman, physician and expert in functional and integrative medicine, wrote for Well+Good that “the taste of sweet be it artificial or actual sugar appears to play a significant role in increasing appetite” in general.
Artificial sweeteners increase your cravings, especially for sweets. As such, drinking even just one Diet Coke every day could cause you to want even more sweets and for anyone trying to get healthy, that’s pretty much the last thing they’d want to be craving.
Drinking Diet Coke Every Day Can Cause Hypertension
Though high blood pressure, or hypertension as it is also known, may be common over 100 million Americans suffer from hypertension, according to the American Heart Association that doesnt mean it isnt dangerous. As if that werent scary enough, drinking a Diet Coke every day may actually cause high blood pressure.
A 2016 study from the Department of Food and Nutrition at Kyung Hee University in South Korea found that high SSB and ASB consumption is associated with an increased risk of hypertension. Why Do My Kidneys Hurt When I Drink Soda
Kidneys are a part of the urinary system that works to clean out toxins that your body accumulates.
This is a vital process that your body needs to do in order to stay healthy.
This mostly happens when you drink water. People who drink more soda are less likely to drink water.
Water is needed to hydrate yourself and also helps your kidneys clean your body of toxins.
Kidneys are a part of the urinary system, which functions to clean your body of toxins. This system relies on water to work properly.
Without drinking plenty of water, toxins will continue to build up in your system and can lead to long term health problems. Soda is not an appropriate substitution for hydration or for cleansing your body of toxins.
The more soda you drink, the more toxins are built up in your body that will need to cleanout.
But if you drink more soda and not enough water, then your body will not have the ability to clean those toxins that are built up out. If you do not drink water at all then that can also cause kidney problems and pain.
Dark soda has toxins that your body needs to get rid of, including sugar, phosphoric acid, and caffeine.
When you only add these toxins and not a way to get rid of the toxins, they will continue to build up and cause potential problems. The only way for these toxins to be removed is to drink more water.
Drinking dark soda can cause problems for people with pre-existing kidney issues as well. Especially for people who are on dialysis.

Colas And Chronic Kidney Disease
Soda consumption is also linked to chronic kidney disease, a condition where the kidney gradually loses function and which may eventually lead to renal failure. One study uncovered that you could also increase your risk of chronic kidney disease by downing as little as two or more colas every day. Test subjects who had this amount of cola doubled their risk of kidney disease. And while this was true of both artificially sweetened and regular cola, researchers in this study concluded that other non-cola sodas did not present this increased risk.
Is Diet Coke Better For You Than Regular Coke
Let’s not sugarcoat the facts: Neither regular nor diet sodas are healthy. While Diet Coke is associated with a laundry list of adverse health outcomes, good old Coca-Cola has its own health detriments. Since regular Coke is sweetened with sugar, it’s high in empty calories that spike your blood sugar, contribute to weight gain, and increase blood pressure. So ultimately, when it comes to choosing between regular and Diet Coke, it’s a matter of “pick your poison.”
“The answer to whether Diet Coke is bad for you isn’t black and white,” says Best. “Considering the artificial ingredients used in diet and regular sodas, it can be assumed that any diet is better without diet soda. However, if you’re choosing between regular or diet soda, the diet option will be better since regular soda is higher in calories and the negative health effects are associated with more chronic conditions and higher mortality rates.”

Is Diet Coke Bad For You A Review Of The Evidence
When choosing which soda to drink, you would think a “sugar-free” or “calorie-free” option like Diet Coke would be healthier. It makes sense, considering the havoc sugar can wreak on your overall health.
Research published in Nutrients earlier this year concluded that people who consume high amounts of added sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened beverages, are at a greater risk of several health conditions, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Not to mention the damage sugary drinks can do to your oral health.
While it’s unlikely anyone drinks soda for its health benefits, they may think they’re doing less harm to their health by opting for low-calorie sodas like Diet Coke instead of their sugar-sweetened counterparts. But, as is often the case, commercial food and beverage products marketed as “healthier options” come with their own baggage and health consequences.
For example, the artificial sweeteners found in Diet Coke are calorie-free, but that doesn’t mean they’re better for you. According to a 2017 study published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke, the artificial sweeteners in diet sodas can skyrocket your risk of heart disease, stroke, and dementiathree of the top 10 causes of death in America.

New research suggests that drinking sugary, caffeinated soft drinks while exercising in hot weather may increase the risk of kidney disease. The study is published ahead of print in the American Journal of Physiology Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology.
The research team found higher levels of creatinine in the blood and a lower glomerular filtration rate markers for kidney injury after the soft drink trial. These temporary changes did not occur when the participants drank water. In addition, the participants blood levels of vasopressin, an anti-diuretic hormone that raises blood pressure, was higher and they were mildly dehydrated during and after the soft drink trial. The consumption of soft drinks during and following exercise in the heat does not rehydrate, the researchers explained. Thus, consuming soft drinks as a rehydration beverage during exercise in the heat may not be ideal. Further work will need to discern the long-term effects of soft drink consumption during exercise in the heat, and its relation to the risk of .

What Is Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric Acid is a colorless, odorless, and corrosive crystalline liquid that gives carbonated drinks its tangy flavor and prevents mold and bacteria growth. According to British pharmacist Niraj Naik, the intense sweetness of Coca-Cola should make a person throw up as soon as it enters the body, but the phosphoric acid dulls the sweetness, allowing people to keep the drink down. Colas are acidified by phosphoric acid, unlike other carbonated soda drinks that use citric acid. Phosphoric acid is made from the mineral phosphorus that is naturally found in the body.
It works with calcium to support bone health, kidney function, and the bodys ability to store and use energy. Phosphorus is responsible for all cellular processes and plays an essential role in using B vitamins, delivering oxygen to tissues, and growing connective tissue.
As phosphorus is found naturally in many foods, it is more common for people to have too much phosphorus in the body. People with healthy kidney function remove excess phosphorus naturally. However, people with CKD cannot remove phosphorus efficiently, increasing their risk of developing hyperphosphatemia.
Hyperphosphatemia refers to abnormally elevated serum phosphate levels as a result of decreased phosphate excretion or increased phosphate intake. Most people with hyperphosphatemia dont manifest symptoms. For people with CKD, elevated phosphate levels trigger calcium levels in the body to drop.
