What Can’t You Eat On A Plant
What you decide to avoid is up to you. For the most part, people on plant-based diets eat less of the following:
- Refined grains: white rice, white bread, refined pasta, etc.
- Packaged foods: cookies, chips, sugary cereals, etc.
- Processed meats: bacon, sausage, etc.
But what about meat, seafood, eggs, cheese, and all those other favorites? Sheinelle decided to eat mostly vegan for the first month, but plans on enjoying eggs and seafood after the fact and that can still count as plant-based.
“I think many people get a little caught up in the idea of ‘plant-based’ meaning vegetarian or vegan and thats simply not the case,” London says. “Plant-based does not mean eliminating food groups or lean sources of protein in totality! Its much friendlier than that.”
She recommends choosing low-fat, unsweetened dairy products and dairy alternatives to get sufficient potassium, magnesium, and calcium. “These nutrients counterbalance the effects of sodium in the diet and have the effect of minimizing bloat,” London adds. Adding some seafood to your plate of veggies will also help supply your body with cognition-boosting omega-3’s.
Plus, it’s not realistic to assume you’ll never eat or drink something you love again. “I don’t want to live my life where I can’t have a cinnamon roll,” Sheinelle says. “Even if you do 70/30 plant-based eating, I think your body kind of feels a difference. That’s kind of where I am.”
What To Eat On A Wfpb Diet
We really love how uncomplicated eating like this can be. No need to strictly follow recipes (though you can to get a feel for it, just take a look at our collection of free recipes, we just freestyle with our favorite representatives from the different plant-based food groups. Guaranteed to be nutritious and delicious!
This isnt what most people believe in the beginning, though. Moving away from animal products can seem scary, and for the uninitiated, it can look like theres pretty much nothing left to eat except for some sad lettuce and expensive avocado toast.
Basically, the main foods to eat on a plant-based diet are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and nuts and seeds. But what actual foods at the store can you grab? Here are some examples.
What Is A Whole
There is no clear definition of a what constitutes a whole-foods, plant-based diet . The WFPB diet is not necessarily a set diet its more of a lifestyle.
This is because plant-based diets can vary greatly depending on the extent to which a person includes animal products in their diet.
Nonetheless, the basic principles of a whole-foods, plant-based diet are as follows:
- Emphasizes whole, minimally processed foods.
- Limits or avoids animal products.
- Focuses on plants, including vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, seeds and nuts, which should make up the majority of what you eat.
- Excludes refined foods, like added sugars, white flour and processed oils.
- Pays special attention to food quality, with many proponents of the WFPB diet promoting locally sourced, organic food whenever possible.
For these reasons, this diet is often confused with vegan or vegetarian diets. Yet although similar in some ways, these diets are not the same.
People who follow vegan diets abstain from consuming any animal products, including dairy, meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and honey. Vegetarians exclude all meat and poultry from their diets, but some vegetarians eat eggs, seafood or dairy.
The WFPB diet, on the other hand, is more flexible. Followers eat mostly plants, but animal products arent off limits.
While one person following a WFPB diet may eat no animal products, another may eat small amounts of eggs, poultry, seafood, meat or dairy.

How Can Vegans Lose Weight Faster

We dont recommend fast weight loss, and in fact, we understand that dieting is a predictor of future weight gain. Besides, neither weight nor BMI accurately represent our health. For all these reasons, we prefer to focus on health and how we feel, instead of numbers on a set of scales. But for those who wish to lose some weight, there are a few ideas that can help.

Can You Eat Gluten Or Grains On A Plant
For most people, whole grains can be part of a healthy, plant-based diet. Some of my favorite grains are quinoa, millet, amaranth, buckwheat, oats, and teff. In many studies, whole grains have been shown to help fight heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and even obesity. But not everything is peachy in grain land.
While some grains are grown organically, most are sprayed with pesticides. And some crops, especially wheat, may even be treated with glyphosate as a desiccant . Corn is often genetically engineered. Then theres rice, which, while popular, is often contaminated with a disturbing amount of arsenic.
For some medical conditions, like autoimmune diseases, grains can also cause inflammation in the gut and contribute to symptoms. This is especially true with the gluten present in wheat. Although only about 1% of the worlds population has diagnosed celiac disease, many more show signs of gluten intolerance with symptoms like headaches, joint pain, skin problems, seizures, and digestive issues. If youre facing any of these symptoms, it can be helpful to go gluten-free for three to six months and see if they clear up.
While many people have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon, that doesnt mean its necessarily best for everyone. A few studies actually show health benefits from eating whole grain wheat products.
A Reduced Risk Of Cancer
Research from the United Kingdom looked at about 475,000 adults who were cancer free at baseline. The participants were categorized as regular meat eaters, low meat eaters, fish eaters, and vegetarians and followed up to check their incidence of cancer 11.4 years later. The low meat eaters, fish eaters, and vegetarians had a lower risk of colorectal, breast, and prostate cancers when compared with regular meat eaters. The researchers suspect a low BMI could also be a contributing factor to the lower cancer risk.
Another study focused on breast cancer specifically and found that individuals who most closely followed a plant-based diet had 67 percent lower risk of breast cancer than those who followed it the least.
One note: If youre not ready to give up on animal proteins just yet, dont worry. Another study found that, while adding plant-based proteins to your diet can help lower your risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, there was no increased risk associated with animal proteins. So while its not necessary to completely eliminate meats and dairy from your diet, you can still lower your risk of certain diseases by making an effort to include more plant proteins. To set yourself up for success, Manaker suggests making a shopping list heavy on produce, beans, and plant-based proteins to make sure you have plenty of options to reach for when you get hungry.

What Foods Are Allowed On A Plant
Most foods can fit into a plant-based diet. What’s more important than the specific plant foods you’re eating is that you’re eating plant foods at every meal. “When following a plant-based diet, aim to incorporate more plants into all your eating occasions,” says Gorin. “I advise my clients to incorporate a fruit or vegetable into every meal or snack. Then, aim to have some of your protein and healthy fat sources be plant-basedfor instance, chickpeas or lentils in a power bowl, and pistachios or a sliver of avocado at snack time,” Gorin says.
By going plant-based, you’ll feel better, have more energy, help your body fight off disease, lose weight, among other plant-based benefits.
To get started, here’s exactly what you can eat, as well as the things you might want to avoid on a plant-based diet.

Monitor Your Health To Adjust Your Eating Habits
Saying there’s one best way to eat is like saying there’s one type of exercise that’s best for everyone. The truth is what works for one person may not work for another. And what works at one stage in life may not work at another. The key is to find what works for you and to monitor your health so you can make adjustments as needed.
Energy levels, sleep patterns, digestion, and how you feel mentally and emotionally are all good indicators of whether or not you’re eating in a way that’s supportive of your health. Metabolic health markers like blood sugar can also give insight into how well your body can process and use the nutrients you’re consuming.
For some people, eating a lot of plant-based proteins and grains can lead to higher post-meal blood sugar levels because of the extra carbohydrates. Others find that plant-based foods’ high-fiber, low-sugar keep blood sugar stable.
A continuous glucose monitor paired with the Signos app can help you track your blood sugar in real-time to see how different foods and meals affect you. This data can be a valuable tool in helping you adjust your diet to find what works best for you.
For example, you may find that whole grains significantly increase your blood sugar, but when paired with beans and avocado, the spike is minimized. It’s a fun way to self-experiment while optimizing health at the same time.
Living A Whole Food Plant

Are you curious about a whole-food, plant-based diet ? The T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies is here to help you get started.
The term whole in WFPB describes foods that are minimally processed. This includes as many whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes as you want.
Many eventually give up the diet label, in favor of lifestyle. Perhaps thats because our popular notion of dieting has become so confusing. A WFPB lifestyle is different. Its not a short-term punishment charged by guilt. Its not a set of complicated meal plans. Its simply a return to whole foods, rich flavors, and natural health.

Where Can I Buy Plant
Pretty much any grocery store carries plant-based foods! While you may need to seek out specialty items online or at a health foods store, the bulk of your shopping can be done at Aldi, Kroger, Walmartyou name it. Keep an eye out for a vegetarian section, though. Many shops group meat alternatives, tofu and other vegetarian staples together in the same part of the store. And if youre struggling to find something, just ask! Grocery store employees should be able to point you in the right direction.
Whole Grains Cereals And Pseudocereals
Whole grains, cereals, and pseudocereals are good sources of complex carbs, fiber, and iron, as well as B vitamins, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and selenium.
However, some varieties are more nutritious than others, especially when it comes to protein.
For instance, the ancient grains spelt and teff contain 10.7 and 9.7 grams of protein per cooked cup, respectively (
56 ).
Therefore, vegan individuals who fall into one of these categories should make a special effort to consume enough choline-rich foods.
Summary
Choline-rich plant foods such as tofu, cauliflower, broccoli, and quinoa are important for the proper functioning of your body.

The Meat Of Plant Diets
The other question deals with a man’s appetite for animal products. When it comes to your heart, are all animal foods off the table? Maybe not if you’re smart about your choices.
Dr. Satija led a study, published in the July 25, 2017, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, that examined the dietary data of about 209,000 adults over two decades. The researchers compared the heart disease risk posed by these three categories of plant-based diets:
-
an overall plant-based diet that emphasized consumption of all healthy plant foods while reducing intake of all animal foods, like dairy , eggs, fish, meat , and foods that contain animal products like pizza, soups, and mayonnaise
-
a healthful plant-based diet that emphasized consumption of only healthy plant foods, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and healthy oils, while reducing intake of less healthy plant foods as well as animal foods
-
an unhealthful plant-based diet that emphasized consumption of less healthy plant foods, such as fruit juices, refined grains , potatoes , and sugar-sweetened beverages, while reducing the intake of healthy plant foods as well as animal foods.
No surprise, they found that the people who followed the healthy plant-based diet had the lowest risk for heart disease. They were also more active and leaner. On the other hand, those who followed the unhealthful plant-based diet had a substantially higher risk for heart disease.

A Reduced Risk For Type 2 Diabetes
In a review published in July 2018 in JAMA Internal Medicine, researchers found that following a plant-based diet was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. The nine studies involved about 307,100 participants, and were adjusted for factors such as smoking status and exercise frequency that otherwise could have affected the results. Researchers therefore deduced that the lower risk was due to participants diet choices.
The reason for this lower risk of type 2 diabetes may be improved function of beta cells, which help produce insulin . Past research has noted that as type 2 diabetes progresses, beta cell function declines and this can cause dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar levels. But a randomized trial found that after just 16 weeks following a plant-based diet, participants had better beta cell function and insulin sensitivity compared with the control group not to mention improved body mass indexes and less belly fat. Manaker agrees that a plant-based diet can help you manage your weight, and may even lead to weight loss if you follow it in a healthy way. Most people also start to feel like they have more energy, she adds.
