Plant Based Diet For Beginners – My Top 3 Tips For Newbies!

When you go plant based or vegan, no doubt family and friends will inevitably ask you the age ole question of but where do you get your protein? Dont worry, it happens to use all, but of course you want to be armed with all the relevant information for your response to negate those looks of concern or sometimes full on alarm.

This is why learning how to put together a nutritious meal with plenty of amino acids will help to keep you thriving in that way you probably dreamed of when you decided to jump over to the plant based side. And thriving is why people turn to the dense, energy giving nutrition of plants over animal products in the first place.

If you start out on this journey without arming yourself with the information you need, then you wont be making the most out of some of the more advanced benefits that the plant based life has to offer. These include:-

  • Less Muscle Soreness after Exercise
  • You may get Fitter Quicker
  • General Vitality may Soar

All of these awesome benefits can be possible when you do plant based the right way, which means opting for a more whole foods plant based diet rather than just a pant based diet.

Be Mindful Of Faux Meat Products

Thanks to their widespread availability, faux meat products have made it easier for vegetarian newbies to give up the real deal. But not all products are created equal, and you should look for ones that use high-quality ingredients, are minimally processed, and have limited added salt, warns Feller. “When you do have them, make it intentional,” she adds. Meaning, don’t eat the same way you did when you were eating meat, just swapping in faux meat products. “You want to make sure your plate is centered around whole and minimally processed plants,” recommends Feller.

Are There Any Downsides To A Plant

“There is this perception that you can’t get adequate protein from plant-based foods,” Bartolotto says. “However, nothing could be further from the truth. Eating beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds each day will ensure you get enough protein and other nutrients.”

In addition, tofu, lentils, and spinach are good sources of iron. Ensuring you get enough iron and protein on a plant-based diet is particularly important because, typically, most people get the majority of these nutrients from meat.

As Bartolotto explains, there really aren’t a lot of downsides to eating a plant-based diet, as long as you eat a varied diet with a combination of beans, lentils, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. This balance will ensure you get everything that you need nutritionally.

Another way to avoid potential health risks is to consider taking a B12 supplement if you’re avoiding all animal products. You can also take a calcium supplement, as the amount of calcium in plant food varies, Bartolotto says.

Start Slow And Steady

Once you decide which animal products you’d like to keep in or nix from your meals, it’s time to get started on your vegetarian diet plan. While cutting meat cold turkey works for some, most people should probably make a gradual transition into being a full-fledged vegetarian, which can help make the diet more sustainable, recommends Caspero. The first step: Take a good, hard look at the foods on your plate. If you usually eat three vegetables a week, amp that intake up to five or six for the next two weeks. From there, continue to slowly eat more plant foods until your entire diet is plant-based, she suggests.

While that strategy should make your transition easier, it can still feel overwhelming to take on a plant-based eating style completely on your own. For that reason, it might be a good idea to chat about your vegetarian diet plan with a registered dietitian or your healthcare provider, recommends Maya Feller, M.S., R.D.N., C.D.N., a registered dietitian nutritionist. “I think it’s helpful to be as liberal as possible and to ensure you don’t go into it from a fear perspective, thinking that certain foods are ‘good’ and others are ‘bad,'” she explains.

How To Shop For The Plant Based Diet On A Budget

When I was on my three week plant based diet plan I realized that I needed to control our food spending. Many fresh foods are more expensive that the conventional processed foods. This can make eating a plant based diet on a budget hard. There are a few things you can do to save money while transitioning to a plant based diet.

  • Shop at lower-priced grocers. Shop at grocery stores like Aldi or Trader Joe’s that have excellent plant based diet food selections. These stores have great produce sections and have many of the staples for a plant-based diet.
  • Shop in season. Even if you aren’t shopping at a budget store like Aldi or Trader Joe’s, your local grocery store should have specials or lower prices on seasonal produce. Also, keep a close eye on coupons or store-specials for plant-based diet staples like quinoa or lentils.
  • Shop in bulk. Speaking of plant based diet staples, don’t forget about stores like Costco or Sam’s Club for bulk discount prices on plant based diet foods like quinoa, lentils, beans, olive oil, etc. When you are eating these staples frequently, it makes sense to buy them in larger quantities.
  • Shop local. Utilize your local farmer’s markets to find in-season plant based foods. I love shopping the farmer’s markets for the freshest plant based foods.

Plant Based Diet Meal Plan : A Beginner

Vegan diets have gained in popularity over the years, especially among people with a desire to boost their health, to protect the planet or other altruistic reasons. But the prospect of giving up cheese, fish and many other animal-based products can be daunting.

Still, millions of people follow the vegan diet. About 3% of the U.S. population adheres to a vegan eating regimen, according to a 2018 Gallup poll. That translates to nearly 10 million people in a country of 330 million people.

Whole plant foods are not only the healthiest and most sustainable foods around theyre also some of the most affordable. In fact, going plant-based can cut grocery bills by $750 a year per person, according to research published in the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition.

When you stock your kitchen with WFPB staples such as brown rice, potatoes, and dried beans, you can assemble nutritious, satisfying meals for just a few dollars. Can You Eat Gluten Or Grains On A Plant

For most people, whole grains can be part of a healthy, plant-based diet. Some of my favorite grains are quinoa, millet, amaranth, buckwheat, oats, and teff. In many studies, whole grains have been shown to help fight heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and even obesity. But not everything is peachy in grain land.

While some grains are grown organically, most are sprayed with pesticides. And some crops, especially wheat, may even be treated with glyphosate as a desiccant . Corn is often genetically engineered. Then theres rice, which, while popular, is often contaminated with a disturbing amount of arsenic.

For some medical conditions, like autoimmune diseases, grains can also cause inflammation in the gut and contribute to symptoms. This is especially true with the gluten present in wheat. Although only about 1% of the worlds population has diagnosed celiac disease, many more show signs of gluten intolerance with symptoms like headaches, joint pain, skin problems, seizures, and digestive issues. If youre facing any of these symptoms, it can be helpful to go gluten-free for three to six months and see if they clear up.

While many people have jumped on the gluten-free bandwagon, that doesnt mean its necessarily best for everyone. A few studies actually show health benefits from eating whole grain wheat products.

Potential Health Benefits Of A Plant

In the United States, having a poor-quality diet is the biggest predictor of early death, according to an article published in the May 2017 Journal of Geriatric Cardiology. A classic American diet thats high in saturated and trans fats, sodium, and processed meat puts you at a disadvantage when it comes to health and longevity, while a diet that promotes whole foods and plant-based ingredients appears to have the opposite effect.

Indeed, most people who adopt this way of eating do it for the potential health benefits. There have been many cardiac benefits linked to eating this way, like reduced cholesterol, Manaker says. Some studies suggest that eating a plant-based diet may improve fertility parameters, and it also may reduce your risk of developing diabetes. A well-planned plant-based diet can be safe for everyone, including babies, children, and people who are pregnant or nursing, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics noted in its 2016 position paper.

As the following research suggests, a plant-based diet may help reduce the likelihood that youll need medication, lower your risk of obesity and high blood pressure, and maybe even help prevent or manage type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Heres a closer look at possible plant-based diet benefits.

    Tips For Starting A Plant

This isnt a rigid diet where you need to stick to certain calorie restrictions or eat the same meals every day. Following a plant-based diet is flexible, and theres plenty of room to make the diet your own by choosing the plant-based foods you like best. It also presents a good opportunity to experiment in the kitchen and try out tasty new recipes you hadnt considered before. Here are five tips to get you started on your plant-based journey.

  • Limit meat to one meal per day. If youre someone who eats a lot of meat right now, it may seem hard to suddenly drop it from your diet. So do it gradually. Start by trying to eat meat-free during the day and have meat only at dinner. It may also help to change the way you think about meat. View it as a garnish rather than the centerpiece of your plate, suggests Harvard Health, and you can continue to whittle it away from your meals.
  • Substitute plant-based proteins for animal-based foods. Try plant-based protein sources, such as tofu, legumes, and grains, in place of beef and fish, suggests the National Kidney Foundation.
  • Rethink dessert. Eating a plant-based diet doesnt need to be a bummer there are plenty of vegan dessert options and recipes . Even fresh fruit after dinner could help satisfy your sweet tooth without added sugar or unhealthy fats.
