How To Start A Low Fodmap Diet
There are two phases of FODMAP diets: elimination and reintroduction. The first part of the process takes at least two and no more than six weeks. In McCoys experience, patients should start to see improvement by two weeks. If they dont, they should stop. It means their symptoms are not related to high FODMAP foods.
The second phase is a slow, single-ingredient reintroduction. I like to start with foods that are staples in their diet like wheat or dairy, starting small, and going up slowly, McCoy says. Usually, I do this one week at a time. For example, on Day 1, start with a small slice of bread. Wait a day, try again. Wait another day and try it in larger quantities. This can help the patient see if they have a threshold before symptoms arise or if it’s a safe food.
This time-consuming step is important to do in silos for clearer-cut determination if a food item is a gut offender for the individual or not. After that, youll know what you can and cannot eat in the long term and be able to get back to enjoying food without fear.

A Week Of Easy And Delicious Low
Last year, a medical diagnosis forced me to try out a low-FODMAP diet to heal my gut. For those who dont know what this is, the diet is an acronym that stands for certain types of fermentable carbohydrates. Its incredibly complicated to remember the rules. But among the biggest items on the omission list are garlic and onion, which makes it nearly impossible to eat at restaurants. Needless to say, meal planning and prep came to the rescue in a big way. Ive since been on a mission to make cooking for this diet a whole lot more delicious and less painful . The below dinners not only fit within the parameters of this IBS diet, but are also generally anti-inflammatory and nutrient-dense, which isnt always true of low-FODMAP recipes.

What Is A Low
FODMAPs are Fermentable Oligosaccharides Disaccharides Monosaccharides And Polyols. Put simply, all of these are short chain carbohydrates and sugar alcohols found in natural whole foods.
These compounds can be difficult for some people to digest, particularly those with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Foods that are high in FODMAPs can cause painful symptoms such as gas, bloating, distention, fatigue, and irregular bowel movements.
A diet that is low in FODMAPs is a diet that is low in fermentable carbohydrate, lowering the amount of fermentation that goes on in your gut, thus creating less instances of constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, all around systemic inflammation, etc.
While eating a Low-FODMAP diet is not a long-term solution to resolving all gut and inflammatory issues, it can definitely provide the relief you need for short periods of time. If you experience flairs when you dont eat Low-FODMAP, that is a clear sign the underlying issue needs to be addressed with a practitioner.
