What Is The Bone Broth Diet

Bone Broth As A Source Of Minerals

What is the âBone Broth Dietâ?

Bone is said to contain minerals, but the available data suggest that amounts of minerals like calcium and magnesium are very low. The cooking time and cooking method can affect the mineral yield in bone broth, even with optimal cooking methods .

Longer cooking time yields not only more minerals but also more collagen . For this reason, home-cooked bone broths likely have more nutrition than commercially made bone broths, but purchasing bone broth is often more convenient.

The Secret To Success On The Diet

Many dieters come out of the gates losing weight. Only to put it back on once they stop the diet or cleanse.

This meal plan may not be easy to stick to in the long-term. Why? Because any activity that restricts your lifestyle is a shock to your routine and mental framework.

You may experience success in the short term in the form of weight loss. That is great!

But many dieters go on to gain the weight back on after months or years. The secret to keeping the weight off is building new habits that you can incorporate into your daily life.

The key is that these habits must be sustainable. Translation: Don’t bite off more than you can chew while doing this diet plan. Start very conservatively so you set yourself up for success.

It May Protect The Joints

Bone broth is a source of gelatin, which may break down into collagen in the body. This is especially important in the joints.

Cartilage in the joints tends to wear down or shrink through continual use. This can add more stress to the joints, which may become damaged as a result of the added pressure.

A 2017 review that appears in the journal Sports Medicine suggests that both laboratory and animal studies show that gelatin supplementation increases the amount of collagen in the tissues. This may help protect the joints from unnecessary stress.

Consuming bone broth may be a good way to add gelatin to the diet, which may help protect these joints.

The compounds present in bone broth help maintain the joints, and they may also help people who already have osteoarthritis.

A 2016 study in the Nutrition Journal looked at the effects of type 2 collagen in people who had osteoarthritis symptoms in their knees. The collagen came from the connective tissue of chickens.

Its results show that collagen can improve knee joint symptoms, such as pain, stiffness, and poorer physical function, in people with osteoarthritis.

Consuming bone broth may be an easy way to deliver the same type of collagen, along with other helpful nutrients, to the body.

Some amino acids present within bone broth may also be helpful for digestion. An amino acid called glutamine seems very promising.

Drinking bone broth daily may be a simple way to get anti-inflammatory amino acids into the body.

Is There A Difference Between Bone Broth And Regular Broth Or Stock

Yes, there is a difference!

On the simplest level, regular broth isnt simmered with bones for an extended period of time, so contains less of the collagen and gelatin that gives bone broth such incredible benefits.

Most importantly, high quality bone broth is sourced from grass-fed or pasture-raised animals.

Where To Get Bones

The 7

Instead of throwing leftover bones and carcasses from meals in the garbage, save them to make broth.

You can collect the bones in a bag and store them in your freezer until you are ready to cook them.

However, if youre not someone who typically buys and eats whole chickens and bone-in meat, you may wonder where you can find animal bones to make broth.

You can ask for them at your local butcher or farmers market. The meat department at most grocery stores will often have them too.

The best part is theyre very inexpensive to purchase. Your butcher may even give them to you for free.

Do your best to find pastured chicken or grass-fed beef bones, since these animals will be the healthiest and provide maximum health benefits to you.

What Nutrients Does Bone Broth Contain

The nutrient content of bone broth depends on the ingredients and their quality:

  • Bone. The bone itself yields minerals like calcium and phosphorus. Sodium, magnesium, and potassium may also be present.
  • Bone marrow gives you vitamins A, B2, B12, and E, plus omega-3s, omega-6s, and minerals like calcium, iron, selenium, and zinc .
  • Connective tissue. This tissue provides glucosamine and chondroitin, which are popular dietary supplements for arthritis and joint pain.

Bones, marrow, and connective tissue are all largely made up of the protein collagen, which turns into gelatin when cooked.

Gelatin has a unique profile of amino acids and is particularly high in the amino acid glycine .

Here are answers to the most commonly asked questions about bone broth.

How To Do It

New to drinking bone broth and/or fasting? Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about the process:

How long should you do a bone broth fast?

Most people do this type of fasting for a period of three to four days, while consuming several quarts of bone broth daily and eliminating many problematic foods.

Plan to fast for a period of three to four days. This amount of time is best for helping kill off harmful bacteria in the gut, repair the GI tract and repopulate the gut with probiotics.

Longer than this might be tolerable for some, but it also raises the risk for more problems, fatigue and deficiencies in certain groups of people. If you plan on doing intermittent fasting, a longer duration up to 90 days might be beneficial.

How much bone broth should you drink during a fast?

Each day you ideally should consume between three to four quarts of bone broth. Making the broth yourself is the best way to ensure its high-quality and doesnt cost you too much.

About 12 ounces is the proper amount for one serving. You should consume this 12-ounce serving about five times a day 7 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., for example.

What foods should you definitely avoid while fasting?

While fasting, youll ideally not eat anything at all, unless youre doing intermittent fasting and its within your eating window.

Within your eating window, you can include as many healthy fats, clean proteins, fruits and veggies as you choose.

Sleep Benefits Of Bone Broth

Bone Broth Diet

Bone broth is naturally high in L-glycine, which has been shown in studies to improve sleep. Glycine inhibits neurotransmitters and is an essential amino acid that we need to partially acquire from our diet . According to one study, 3 grams of glycine consumed before bedtime shortened the time it took to fall asleep and improved overall sleep . Another study has made this association as well . If you struggle with insomnia or falling asleep, you might drink bone broth before bed for a simple, non-toxic sleep aid.

How To Use Bone Broth

Bone broth is a great way to add more nutrients to your diet. For a while now, there has been a trend towards eating a low carb diet. This includes removing processed foods and sugars from your diet, as well as reducing the amount of carbs you eat. This may be because of the fact that many of us are trying to lose weight. But when youre trying to lose weight, it can be hard to eat enough calories to maintain your weight. This is where bone broth can come in handy. Bone broth is made from the bones of beef or chicken. Bone broth contains high levels of protein, which is helpful for those who are trying to lose weight. Bone broth also contains minerals such as magnesium and calcium. So, when youre looking for ways to improve your diet, bone broth is a great way to make sure youre getting enough nutrients.

Who Should Not Try A Bone Broth Diet

While a bone broth diet is probably okay for adults who dont have underlying conditions, it is definitely not a good idea for pregnant or breastfeeding women because they shouldnt be restricting calories at all. Research also suggests its not right for anyone under age 21 or with diagnosed conditions .

While weight loss diet plans can have benefits, sometimes the downsides of caloric restriction outweigh the benefits. Make sure youre following a dietary plan that is right for you and not just because its popular or you want a quick fix solution.

Great Book But Needs Companion Material

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I think the audiobooks are an easy way for busy people with any sort of commute to get the information their looking for without taking any additional time from their schedule. This book has a ton of great information.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Dr. Petrucci, of course. This question really doesn’t apply to this book

Have you listened to any of Erin Bennetts other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of Ms. Bennett’s prior performances. She was easy to understand but a little monotone.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The sections of the book that speak to the success of others using the plan are inspirational.

Any additional comments?

This book has a lot of great information that supports making healthy change in your life whether you need to lose weight, improve gut health, or just want to make some generally healthy changes in your diet. The one draw back is that there are a ton of recipes in the book that I didn’t need to have “read” to me. I think it would have been best to provide a supplemental download containing those recipes and just skip reading them.

How To Follow A Bone Broth Diet

7

A bone broth diet is built on the foundation of a paleo diet, which eliminates grains, legumes, and dairy products and focuses on veggies, grass-fed meats, and other nourishing whole foods. Youll eat this way five days a week, and then on two days , youll only have one cup of bone broth at six different times. On non-fasting days, youll also drink some bone broth in addition to Paleo, sugar-free meals.

If youve never tried intermittent fasting before, a bone broth diet strikes a balance that might help people who tend to get shaky from low blood sugar if they go too long without food. Since bone broth contains protein, it can help to provide some balance.

The Bone Broth Diet And Inflammation

Some research suggests that losing weight, eatingnutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, and oily fish, and intermittentfasting can reduce systemic inflammation.

On these grounds, theres reason to believe that the Bone Broth Diet may reduce inflammation, but as yet, we have no research to back up this claim.

Fights Inflammation And Joint Pain

Collagen is essential to tissues throughout the human body, including in the skin, tendons, and joints. Bone broth contains accessible nutrients like collagen that can help to support the bodys own collagen stores, helping to provide relief for arthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions.

Research from 2006 explains how collagen can be beneficial for treating pain associated with arthritis. One animal study found that collagen had an anti-inflammatory effect on arthritis and even protected against joint damage.

Glycine, an amino acid found in bone broth, has a protective and anti-inflammatory effect in the body. It supports the entire digestive tract, even helping to prevent ulcers. It fights inflammation, helps to provide balance to the immune system, and protects against unnatural cell death and damage.

The Bone Broth Diet And Metabolic Health

Losing weight improves your metabolic health in many ways, including helping you regulate your blood sugar. As such, the Bone Broth Diet may be able to help.

Whats more, researchshowsthat low-carb diets tend to be better than low-fat diets for managing type 2 diabetes, which is another potential benefit of the Bone Broth Diet.

That said, we need more researchparticularly on the Bone Broth Diet specificallybefore we can say that the Bone Broth Diet is a boon for metabolic health. Theres also no reason to think The Bone Broth Diet is superior to other calorie-restricted, whole-foods based diets for this purpose.

Bone Broth Supports Autoimmune Conditions And Gets Rid Of Inflammation

I see claims all the time of an ingredient, or supplement, supporting X condition or bodily process. This is an intentionally vague claim that has little to no merit, since the average person cant prove or disprove it.

Lets put it this way: lots of people say theyre inflamed, but how are they measuring that?

Regardless, weight loss can improve inflammatory markers, and presumably, may improve symptoms of some autoimmune diseases IF a persons weight is causing them issues.

Yet again, bone broth doesnt really play a part in this its the diet being low in calories causing weight loss.

Health Benefits Of Modified Fasting

A bone broth diet is a modified fasting plan, incorporating principles of intermittent fasting. When most people think of fasting, they think of not eating anything at all. However, many types of fasting involve modifications to normal dietary intake.

There are several demonstrated benefits to modified fasting. A 2018 review found that intermittent fasting for weight loss was more effective or equally effective compared to a non-fasting low-calorie diet. Yet many find paleo eating to be far more satisfying than a traditional low-calorie diet where you always have the potential to feel deprived.

The bone broth diet approach of eating paleo meals five days a week and consuming only bone broth for the other two fits a pattern of time-restricted feeding. This method can support heart health and metabolism, with even more far-reaching positive impacts on gene expression, hormone levels, and cell growth. It also promotes autophagy, which is the bodys built-in way of clearing out damaged cells before they become problematic. It also has anti-aging effects, too.

Thats quite a collection of benefits!

The Bone Broth Diet And Bone And Joint Health

My 3 Day Bone Broth Fast

Researchshowsthatmaintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to keep your bones and joints healthy and pain-free. If the Bone Broth Diet helps you lose weight, then it may indirectly help improve your bone and joint health.

Bone broth also contains collagen, which can help to improve bone mineral density, bone strength, andjointhealthandfunction

Because we have no research on the Bone Broth Diet, its difficult to say whether it has a positive effect on bone and joint health, especially since research shows homemade and commercially available bone broth products dont contain enough collagen to improve bone and joint health.

Foods To Avoid On The Diet:

The general food that you will need to avoid during the diet to optimize how quickly you burn fat include:

  • Grains: Grains, like oats and wheat, can expand in your stomach causing bloating.
  • Legumes: Soy products and beans should be avoided.
  • Refined and Saturated fats: Eating these will reduce how much fat your body burns.
  • Sugar: Avoid sugars such as honey, maple syrup, and standard table sugar.
  • Beverages other than water and bone broth: These may contain artificial sweeteners.
  • Dairy Products: Avoid most dairy products with the exception of Ghee!

These foods will make it extremely difficult for your body to burn fat – limiting the success of the bone broth diet. Indulging in these food sources will also make your body retain excess water weight, making you appear heavier due to bloating.
